Welcome home! That’s what Colleen Evans’ 5th grade teacher at Brookhaven Elementary classroom feels like for her students. Over the summer she bought, borrowed and built a large variety of seats for her classroom and totally changed the landscape and learning environment. From standing desks, to coffee table seats, to window sill seats, and more, her students have options to move frequently throughout the day. Colleen has seen many positive outcomes since making these changes, her students not only “own” the environment - cleaning and keeping it pristine, she also finds a huge difference in how they “own” their learning. Students collaboration, problem solving and regulation skills have all improved. Colleen “looped” with many of her students teaching them both in 4th and 5th grade and has a true before and after picture of her students’ performance pre-seating choice and post-seating choice. A true testimony that "Environment Matters!" View this video to hear Colleen talk about how she created her classroom!
